The Writers' Tee - February 2020

The Writers' Tee

News and Notes of the Northwest Golf Media Association

February 2020

There is no golf architect with a richer resume of Pacific Northwest golf courses than David McLay Kidd. And we got him.

Kidd, a Scotsman who now lives in Bend, Ore., can list Gamble Sands, Tetherow and Bandon Dunes on his Northwest portfolio. He’ll tell us about his latest work, including lending linksy touches to Seattle’s Sand Point Country Club, as a special guest at the NWGMA’s 2020 opening meeting that will take place at noon March 7 at the Seattle Golf Show.

Kidd is also likely to talk about his “future development” plans in the Northwest, which NWGMA members will hear for the first time.

Free passes for NWGMA members to the meeting and Golf Show are available at the Will Call window on the northwest corner of the Century Link Event Center. The meeting will happen at its usual room on the second floor. (See separate e-newsleJer for other speakers at the meeting.)

NWGMA President Bob Sherwin will share what he can at the meeting about golf and media opportunities in 2020. One thing we do know: NWGMA members will get a special early opportunity in October to play Sand Point at the association’s annual tournament and banquet. Jeff Shelley, NWGMA co-founder and past president, is a Sand Point member who worked with the club leadership to get us on the newly refreshed course, which opened in 1927.

Arguably the biggest big-time Northwest golf news originates north of the border in 2020. Kris Jonasson, NWGMA vice president, reminds us that Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C., will host the CP Canadian Women’s Open Sept. 3-6. There will be a media day, Jonasson said, but no details are available yet.

Also northward: In addition to hosting the PNGA Lamey Cup (May 6-8), Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops will host the Canadian Junior Boys Championship August 10-13. Pheasant Glen Golf Resort on Vancouver Island will host the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship September 15-18.

NWGMA member Josh Kerns reports that he will be recording interviews for the new season of “Golf Talk Washington.” An official media partner of WA Golf, the show (formerly called “Golf Talk Seattle”) debuts Saturday, March 7, on 950 KJR and all major podcast platforms. Josh says he’s “on the hunt all season long for great content. If anyone in the NWGMA has a story they are working on or recently published and would like to discuss for a segment on my show, I’d love to hear about it and see if it fits, starting that day of our meeting. It’s a great opportunity to showcase and expand the reach of our member’s work.” Josh can be reached at josh@golftalkseattle.com.

The aforementioned Shelley checked in with less happy news earlier this month. His remembrance of close friend and fellow NWGMA co-founder, Bob Spiwak, celebrates the life in golf and writing of his pal. You can read Jeff’s full obituary/tribute on the home page of the NWGMA’s website, at www.nwgma.org.

See you all on March 7!
